Edward De Lacy Evans (1830? – 1901) was a Bendigo local who became Australia’s first celebrity trans man when he made international news in 1879. In 1856, Edward travelled under his former name from Ireland, arriving in Bendigo in 1862 where he worked as a carter, miner, blacksmith, and ploughman. In 1879, following an injury at work and a reluctant visit to hospital, it was revealed that Edward was assigned female at birth and he became an interational sensation. This mural by local artist Chris Duffy (with input from our local transgender community) is based on a “carte de visite” image showing Edward as two genders. It has been reimagined as a celebration of a great Victorian and LGBTQIA+ pioneer for the Bendigo Pride Festival 2022. Proudly presented by the City of Greater Bendigo
