Edward De Lacy Evans immigrated from Ireland to Australia in 1856 and worked as a servant, blacksmith and gold miner in the Bendigo area. He made international news in 1879 when, during a forced visit to hospital, it was revealed he had been assigned female at birth. Before this moment, Edward had lived his true life for more than 20 years in 19th century Australia. He married three times and had successful careers as a labourer and miner. This mural by Chris Duffy (with input from Bendigo’s trans community) is a celebration of one our extraordinary elders. Visit Edward and take a picture with him to celebrate his amazing life.
